Dodge Charger 2023: information, prices, technical data (2024)

One look at the 2023 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat is enough to know that this four-door sedan is something very special. The current generation of Charger debuted in the 2005 model year, and since then Dodge has added increasingly powerful engines to the chassis. Under the hood of the latest versions there is a turbocharged V8 engine with at least 717 hp. If you choose a Redeye model, the power increases to 797 hp - and with the jailbreak package it's even an insane 807 hp.

The Charger SRT Hellcat is a car that feels more at home on the track than on the track, but we proved it can hold its own in the corners at our Lightning Lap event a few years ago. Its monstrous acceleration puts it in the same league as higher-priced competitors like the Mercedes-AMG GT63 S and the Porsche Panamera Turbo S, but the Hellcat's interior doesn't compare to those luxury models. But if you're looking for a muscle car with room for your kids—and performance that'll make them giggle and scream—then the Hellcat is a guaranteed thrill.

What's new?

Dodge is celebrating the final model year of the current-generation Charger SRT Hellcat with the Jailbreak Package for Redeye and non-Redeye models. All 2023 Chargers come with a special “Last Call” badge under the hood, commemorating the final production run before Dodge transitions to a new generation of electrified performance vehicles.

If it's our money, we'd spend the extra on the more powerful Redeye model. It has the same desirable standard equipment and some unique features such as a red 220kmh speedometer and a number of Redeye logos. We'd also upgrade the interior with the optional Carbon and Suede Interior Package, which covers the headliner with microsuede and various trim pieces with real carbon fiber.

Engine, transmission and performance

The Hellcat's main attraction is undoubtedly its supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine. If you're not familiar with it, it now produces 717 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. The Redeye model is equipped with an improved version of the Hellcat engine that produces 797 horsepower and 707 Newton meters. With the aptly named Jailbreak package, the Redeye's output is increased to 807 hp. These ultimate Chargers lack nothing in terms of power, which is sent to the rear wheels via a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission.

The regular Hellcat we tested accelerated to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and completed the quarter mile in 11.9 seconds at 124 mph. The Hellcat Redeye we tested accelerated to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and completed the quarter mile in 11.5 seconds at 126 km/h. Of course, this unreal performance comes at a price, and the driver must press the accelerator carefully to maintain traction.

And those big rear tires are expensive to replace. The standard wide tire configuration we drove helps improve the super sedan's body control and cornering grip thanks to the wider, grippier tires and stiffer chassis components. However, the Hellcat's front tires with wide tires don't communicate with the steering wheel as well as we'd like.

Fuel consumption and MPG in practice

The Charger SRT Hellcat is rated at 12 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. That's pretty impressive considering how much power is packed into this sedan. As soon as we have tested the updated powertrain as part of our extensive test program on our 75 km/h fuel-saving route on the highway, we will be able to assess the actual consumption values.

Interior space, comfort and loading

The interior of the SRT Hellcat is the same as the regular Charger. However, it has some standard features and some custom options. Every Charger SRT Hellcat has a 200 mph speedometer, leather upholstery, and heated and ventilated front seats. The Carbon & Suede package offers a real carbon interior and a faux suede headliner. There are plenty of storage spaces for small items in the interior, and we were able to fit seven carry-on items in the Charger's large trunk.

Infotainment and connectivity

Every Charger SRT Hellcat has an 8.4-inch touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The large screen responds quickly to input and the physical knobs and buttons make the interface easy to use. Want to rock out while having massive burnouts? Dodge offers an impressive 19-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system.

Safety and driver assistance

The sedan is quite powerful, but it doesn't have the best assistance systems. While there are some basic driver assistance systems, the more advanced ones like adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking aren't available. You can find out more about the Charger's crash test results on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Some of the key security features are:

  • Blind spot monitoring as standard
  • Rear cross traffic warning as standard
  • Standard rear parking sensors

The 2023 Dodge Charger costs 90,060 euros, but that is only a recommended retail price.
