Porsche presented a prototype of a breathtaking super sports car at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010: the 918 Spyder. The concept car combined high-tech racing technology with an electrified powertrain that not only allowed it to deliver the top performance of a super sports car but also zoom through the city emission-free.

Porsche's first plug-in hybrid was received enthusiastically and it was quickly decided to further develop the sports car into a production version. It took the project team just three years of development time and the first production version of the 918 was presented at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in the autumn of 2013. The car will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2023.

Impressive lap record

Even before the first customer car was delivered, the Porsche 918 Spyder, which was produced in a limited edition of 918 units, demonstrated all its capabilities with an impressive record. With a lap time of 6:57 on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, it was the first road-legal sports car that was faster than the magic limit of seven minutes.

The hybrid powertrain of the Porsche 918 Spyder, which consists of a petrol engine and two electric motors, is designed for optimum efficiency and uncompromising driving dynamics. It offers a choice of five driving modes, which can activate the 4.6-liter V8 engine with 447 kW (608 hp) and the two electric motors with a total power of 210 kW (286 hp) depending on each other. The spectrum ranges from fully electric driving (up to 30 kilometers on a full battery) to uncompromising performance on the track. It accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds and has a top speed of 345 km/h.

The all-wheel drive concept of the Porsche 918 Spyder consists of a combined drivetrain with a combustion engine, an electric motor on the rear axle plus a second electric motor on the front axle. The additional, individually controllable front-wheel drive also made extremely high and safe cornering speeds possible. The advanced boost strategy intelligently controls the energy reserves of the electric drive, allowing the full power of the Porsche 918 Spyder to be used with every full acceleration.

Pioneer for the current generation of E-Hybrid models

The main power source of the Porsche 918 Spyder was a tamed version of the racing engine from the LMP2 RS Spyder. The 4.6-liter engine delivers 447 kW (608 hp) at 8,700 rpm. The hybrid module essentially consists of an electric motor of approximately 115 kW and a dry disconnecting clutch that connects it to the combustion engine. The second electric drive is located on the front axle and works independently of the rear wheels. The traction battery was the most powerful ever at the time: with a specific power of 1.7 kW per kilogram, it delivered a power of up to 230 kW. The Porsche 918 Spyder could also convert much more kinetic energy into electrical energy than any other hybrid at the time.

10 years later, the Porsche 918 Spyder still impresses. And perhaps even more importantly... it has been the high-tech precursor to the performance-oriented hybrid versions of the Cayenne and Panamera since 2017. This makes this special Porsche a true E-Performance pioneer that has formed the basis of the current E-Hybrid models from the Cayenne and Panamera.
